REVIEW: Trial by Fire

Trial by Fire
Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Raised by Wolves # 2

Goodreads Description:
There can only be one alpha.
Bryn is finally settling into her position as alpha of the Cedar Ridge Pack—or at least, her own version of what it means to be alpha when you’re a human leading a band of werewolves. Then she finds a teenage boy bleeding on her front porch. Before collapsing, he tells her his name is Lucas, he’s a Were, and Bryn’s protection is his only hope.  But Lucas isn’t part of Bryn’s pack, and she has no right to claim another alpha’s Were. With threats—old and new—looming, and danger closing in from all sides, Bryn will have to accept what her guardian Callum knew all along. To be alpha, she will have to give in to her own animal instincts and become less human. And, she’s going to have to do it alone.   Bryn faces both the costs, and the rewards, of love and loyalty, in this thrilling sequel to Raised by Wolves.

My thoughts:

This book was as good as the first one.  Bryn is always having to make major decisions, ones that seem to have no good resolution.  Now that she is alpha of the Cedar Ridge Pack, her "mentor" Callum, alpha of another pack, cannot offer her any help without the Senate getting on his case about favoritism and getting into another pack's business.  So Bryn is on her own.  Lucas isn't part of her pack, but she can't send him back to his old pack.  Lucas even tells her that he will kill himself before he goes back there.  But if Bryn doesn't return him, she risks the lives of her own pack.

I just love Bryn.  She cares about everyone's safety.  She may not like everyone, but she doesn't want to see them hurt and she is always there to help.  I really like Callum as well.  He seems like a jerk for not helping her sometimes, but he has his hidden ways of helping her.  Bryn didn't realize he was trying to help her before she even knew what the problem was!  Callum is always looking out for Bryn, and sometimes still acts as if he can tell her what she can and cannot do.  Of course he already knows that she will do the opposite of whatever he says.

This book is really interesting.  The pack laws, boundaries, and just the wolves themselves open your mind to another world.  Even just reading about them sticking together is completely different than the world we live in today.  I really enjoyed reading this book, and am looking forward to the next in this series.

Sandy Williams

Goodreads Description:

It’s her time to choose.

Some humans can see the fae. McKenzie Lewis can track them, reading the shadows they leave behind. But some shadows lead to danger. Others lead to lies.

REVIEW: The Unwritten Rule

The Unwritten Rule
Elizabeth Scott

Goodreads Description:
He's looking at me like—well, like he wants to look at me. Like he likes what he sees, and he's smiling and his eyes are so blue, even in the faint flow of the porch light they shine, and I nod dumbly, blindly, and then grope for the door handle, telling myself to look away and yet not able to do it.
"Sara," he says, softly, almost hesitantly, and my heart slam-bangs, beating hard, and this is what it's like to want someone you can't have. To want someone you shouldn't even be looking at.
Sarah and Brianna have always been friends, and it's always gone like this: guys talk to Sarah in order to get closer to Brianna. So even though Sarah met Ryan first, she's not surprised that he ends up with Brianna (even though Sarah has a massive crush on him).

The three of them hang out, and Sarah and Ryan's friendship grows until one night an innocent exchange between them leads to a moment that makes Sarah realize that Ryan might be interested in her after all. But if there's one unwritten rule, it's this: you don't mess around with a friend's boyfriend.

So Sarah tries to resist temptation. But with the three of them thrown together more and more, tension builds between Sarah and Ryan, and when they find themselves alone together at one point, they realize
they just can't fight how they feel anymore....

My thoughts:
The "unwritten rule" is that you never like your friend's boyfriend.  Sarah and Brianna have been best friends since kindergarten.  Guys only talk or hang out with Sarah so that they can be closer to Brianna.  Sarah has only ever really liked two guys, and both of them ended up with Brianna.  Brianna is currently with Ryan, even though Sarah talked to him and liked him first.  He even actually liked her back, but Brianna snatched him up before Sarah figured out he liked her.

Brianna doesn't intentionally hurt her friend, and Sarah never gets mad at Brianna for it.  It is as if Sarah is under this spell where the only thing in life that is important is that Brianna is happy and that Brianna gets what she wants.

Brianna keeps dragging Sarah into her relationship with Ryan.  She doesn't want to be alone with him because he always wants to "talk".  She doesn't even seem to really like him, but she wants him to love her.  As Sarah and Ryan are spending more time together, they are getting closer and closer and both realize their feelings for eachother.  They kiss, not once, but twice.  They begin to feel like they can't fight it anymore.  Sarah just needs to decide if it is worth risking her friendship.

This book was so good.  It didn't really have any "wow" surprising moments, but it was very real.  I loved reading about their relationships and how they intertwine.  Brianna was so awful at some points, but she never seemed to intend to be that way.  It just seemed as though her parent's rejection was showing through in her actions.  Sarah was such a pushover.  Some nights when she didn't want to go out with Brianna and Ryan, as she would be a third wheel, she would go just because Brianna begged.  Ryan didn't seem too confused about who he wanted to be with.  He was just trying to figure out Sarah's feelings and not hurt anybody while still getting what he wants.

Wherever You Go
Heather Davis

What I love:
*The girl is beautiful.  Her expression and body language show that she is confused or lost...which I think is the way she actually feels in the book.  I love it when the covers and what's inside actually go together!

*The colors are amazing.  It looks like the background was magnified.  It is different, but I like it.

*I really like the fuzziness and the blending used between the girl and the greens/blues.

*The font is very plain, but I like it.  This book wouldn't look right with a fancy font on the cover.

Cover Crazy: The Story of Us

This weekly meme is hosted by The Book Worms and is used to show the covers we are crazy about!

The Story of Us
Deb Caletti

What I love:

*I love the sun peeking through.  I think it makes all the difference in this cover.  It makes it so much more beautiful, it almost feels like you are there.

*I love that the girl's whole body isn't shown.  It is much more artistic I think if they can get the right angle and show the right amount, like in this cover.  Her shadow is kind of neat too.

*The setting is gorgeous.  The sand and water just draw me to it.  Her dress is also perfect for this setting.

*The font is so plain, but so fitting.  I love all of Deb Caletti's new covers because of this.  The color of the font matches her dress and really pulls it all together.

REVIEWS: Siren and Undercurrent

Siren and Undercurrent
Siren #1 and #2
Tricia Rayburn

Goodreads Descriptions:
Siren - Vacationing in Winter Harbor, Maine, is a tradition for Vanessa and Justine Sands, and that means spending time with the Carmichael boys. This summer, Vanessa is determined to channel some of her older sister’s boldness, get over her fear of the ocean, and maybe turn her friendship with Simon Carmichael into something much more.
But when Justine goes cliff-diving after a big family argument, and her body washes ashore the next day, Vanessa is sure that it was more than an accident. She is more certain of this, when she discovers that her sister was keeping some big secrets and Caleb Carmichael’s gone missing. Suddenly, the entire oceanfront town is abuzz when a series of grim, water-related accidents occur, with the male victims washed ashore grinning from ear to ear.
Vanessa and Simon team up to figure out if these creepy deaths have anything to do with Justine and Caleb. But will what Vanessa discovers mean the end of her summer romance, or even life as she knows it?

Undercurrent -
The sirens are back, but Vanessa may be the biggest threat of all. . . .
Nothing has been normal since Vanessa Sands learned that her sister was murdered by sirens—femme fatales of the watery depths—and that everything she believed about her family was a lie.

Her boyfriend Simon’s been the only person Vanessa feels she can really trust. But now there are some secrets she can’t tell even him. And when Vanessa finds herself in the sights of Parker, Hawthorne Prep’s resident charmer, she needs someone to confide in more than ever. Doubting her relationship with Simon, unsure of Parker’s intentions—and of her own—and terrified by what she’s learned about herself, Vanessa has never felt so alone.
But personal problems must be put aside, because the Winter Harbor sirens are back for revenge. Now, Vanessa must face her past and accept that she is just like her enemies—every bit as alluring, every bit as dangerous.
The eagerly anticipated second novel of the Siren trilogy, Undercurrent is a seductive paranormal romance that will leave you breathless.

My thoughts:
I decided to review these two books together because I read both of them recently, hosted a giveaway for them, and feel pretty much the same about both books.  I'd rather not write the same thing twice, and I imagine that you'd rather not read the same thing twice. :)

These books were unlike anything I have ever read before.  Sirens have not been written about much.  Actually, these are the only books that I know of that are set in the present day.  I feel like the author really did her research, but also took some risks.  It was the perfect balance and it kept the story constantly interesting.  I never had a problem picking these books up to read.

The characters are really cool.  Vanessa is independent, but is also ready to work with Simon to figure out what happened to her sister and to find his brother.  Vanessa is so concerned about other people.  She makes sure everyone is ok.  However, when she breaks up with Simon in hopes of keeping him from getting hurt, she hurts him even more.

Paige is so easy to get along with.  She becomes instant friends with Vanessa and she really seems to be a true friend.  Paige's sister Zara is the complete opposite.  She is out to get everyone it seems.  She's not easy to get along with and just causes problems.

In Undercurrent, we meet the new guy, Parker.  He is always there for Vanessa.  She often thinks he is Simon, which shows her confusion as to which guy she really likes.  I actually liked this love triangle in this book...it just added another touch to the story.

The setting is amazing in this book.  The name Winter Harbor just sounds gorgeous!  I loved reading about the cliffs and the lake freezing and all of the storms.  All of the details were so important.

My favorite part about this book is Vanessa learning about herself.  She goes through changes and the reader can figure it out with her.  Even as she is investigating her sister's death, it is as if the reader is investigating too.  This was just a really good book.  I really enjoyed it because there isn't anything else like it (that I have read anyway).  The next book is set to be released February 2nd, 2012...and I will definitely be getting that one as well!

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine.  Here is what I am waiting on:

Sweet Venom
Tera Lynn Childs
Medusa Girls # 1

Goodreads Description:
Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they're triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.

REVIEW: Never Have I Ever

Never Have I Ever
Sara Shepard
The Lying Game # 2

Goodreads Description:
My perfect life was a lie.

Now I’d do anything to uncover the truth.

Not long ago, I had everything a girl could wish for: amazing friends, an adorable boyfriend, a loving family. But none of them know that I’m gone—that I’m dead. To solve my murder, my long-lost twin sister, Emma, has taken my place. She sleeps in my room, wears my clothes, and calls my parents Mom and Dad.

And my killer is watching her every move.

I remember little from my life, just flashes and flickers, so all I can do is follow along as Emma tries to solve the mystery of my disappearance. But the deeper she digs, the more suspects she uncovers. It turns out my friends and I played a lot of games—games that ruined people’s lives. Anyone could want revenge . . . anyone could want me—and now Emma—dead.

From Sara Shepard, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Pretty Little Liars books, comes a riveting series about secrets, lies, and killer consequences.

My thoughts:
This book was AMAZING!  I totally thought I had it all figured out, but by the end of the book, I still don't know the answers!

My favorite part about this book is that I was learning new information as Emma and the other characters were.  Nothing was assumed.  And it wasn't as if Emma knew anything that I didn't.  Sometimes I find in other books that when a character learns some new information, that it is based on something from their past that was never written about.  Sara Shepard does not write that way.  She uses Sutton's flashbacks to tell us about related events that happened in her past.  I feel like I know everything there is to know about Emma and that I can really relate to her.

I do have to say that about 2/3 of the way through, I was starting to get a little disappointed.  It was still an awesome book, but I was starting to think that #1 was better.  However, once I passed that point, the book was absolutely amazing again.  The ending was great!

I love the characters in this book.  The Twitter Twins are ridiculous.  I would never want to know anyone like them, but I feel like reading brings me into another world, so I definitely love reading about different characters like that.  Sutton's/Emma's friends and sister seem to be innocent because they all have an alibi.  I feel like Emma can trust them now, but she's not quite trusting them yet.

Overall, this is a really great juicy book!  I love reading about all of the nasty things Sutton did and actually feeling her remorse for it.  I am really looking forward to the next book, Two Truths and a Lie.

REVIEW: So Shelly

So Shelly
Ty Roth

Goodreads Description: Until now, high school junior, John Keats, has only tiptoed near the edges of the vortex that is schoolmate and literary prodigy, Gordon Byron. That is, until their mutual friend, Shelly, drowns in a sailing accident.

After stealing Shelly's ashes from her wake at Trinity Catholic High School, the boys set a course for the small Lake Erie island where Shelly's body had washed ashore and to where she wished to be returned. It would be one last "so Shelly" romantic quest. At least that's what they think. As they navigate around the obstacles and resist temptations during their odyssey, Keats and Gordon glue together the shattered pieces of Shelly's and their own pasts while attempting to make sense of her tragic and premature end.

My thoughts:  I felt many different things throughout this book.  After the first few chapters, I was thinking this book was about Gordon, not Shelly!  About half way through, I was thinking that this book wasn't what I thought it would be.  I was expecting more action.  I was expecting the two boys to have to work harder to make sense of Shelly's death.  It was too easy.  And then in the end, I was thinking that it really was a decent book and the ending was perfect.  There were many interesting things going on in each of their lives, but there wasn't anything jaw-dropping during the boys' journey.  I think there is something missing during their journey.  They needed more difficulty and conflict.

I was really expecting to read more about Shelly.  The whole beginning of the book was about Gordon's past.  I think one chapter would have been enough.  I would have liked to read maybe one chapter about Gordon, one about Keats, and then the rest about Shelly's past and the boys' journey.  It just seemed like the book was so much more about Gordon.  It just doesn't seem to fit.  Sure Shelly was pretty much in love with him, but he didn't see her in that way and this is coming from Keats' point of view anyway!  Keats didn't know Gordon very well.  Even from what he heard from Shelly, that much of the book should not have been devoted to Gordon's past.

I was really excited when I started reading about Put-in-Bay (or South Bass Island), the island the boys visited briefly before going to the island where Shelly's body washed up.  I was quickly disappointed though.  It sounded as though the names and locations of the various islands in that area (on Lake Erie) were all correct, but a lot of it beyond that was made up.  Put-in-Bay is nothing like Mardi Gras.  Don't bring beads expecting a bunch of girls to flash you!  The island is very much a family-oriented vacation spot.  There are several bars, and I'm sure there's also a lot of non-family oriented things going on, but it is not like Mardi Gras!  And the island is not full of foreign workers on six-month visas.  My aunt, uncle, and grandma all work there.  I don't think these little made-up details really add anything to the story.  There is a little bit of truth that was written about the island, and that is regarding the War of 1812 that took place there.  However, this was only briefly mentioned.  I can see making up some parts of the setting and that sort of thing, but make it believable!  I do understand that this is a work of fiction, but my favorite fiction books are those that I can actually learn true facts and information from.

I loved Shelly's story.  She had so much going on in her life, but she really seemed like a trooper.  With as much as she went through, she really didn't seem depressed for very long at all.  I just wish I could have learned more about Shelly and her death.

REVIEW: Outside Wonderland

Outside Wonderland
Lorna Jane Cook

Goodreads Description:
Alice, Griffin, and Dinah Stenen's mother and father died tragically when they were quite young. The loss haunts them into adulthood. Alice is a stage actress in New York who can't commit to a relationship. When she meets Ian she's smitten, but suspects it's Ian's four-year-old son that really captivates her. Griffin and his longtime partner are settled into a contented domesticity, however Theo's insistence that they adopt a child throws Griffin into a panic. When he refuses to cooperate, the crack in their relationship widens. Dinah, the youngest, has a short, passionate love affair that leaves her pregnant and alone when she discovers the father is engaged to someone else. The three look to each other for support during this rough period but they falter. What they don't know is that their parents are watching them from a place outside time and space--worrying, reminiscing, and perhaps guiding their children as each makes their tentative way towards happiness. In luminous prose, Cook tells the story of these tender souls and a love that knows no boundaries.

My thoughts:
This was one of those books that I really wasn't sure about whether I wanted to finish it throughout the whole thing.  It wasn't that the book was terrible by any means, but lately I have just been interested in other genres.  I did finish it and am glad I did.  It really was a good little story.  I love reading about family and loved reading about these three siblings coming together when they really need each other.

The characters were all different, which I like.  I also found it quite interesting to read about a gay man and his relationships.  I know of a couple of gay people, but am not close to anyone who is gay.  So it was really interesting to see that for the most part, they are just like those of us who are not gay.  I loved reading about all the confusion with the character's relationships.  It felt very real!

I loved that this book included the viewpoints of their parents, who are in heaven watching down on them.  It was really cute to read about them and read their comments on what is going on with their children!  They were watching the mistakes being made and accepted that things happen and that making mistakes is a part of life.  They were very calm and accepting.

This wasn't a book that made my jaw drop, but it was decent.  It is a good book for when you have some quiet time and aren't really in any rush to get through it.  It is quite slow and isn't one to keep me up all night...which is good sometimes because I do need to sleep!

Unlovable
Sherry Gammon
Port Fare # 1

What I love:
*This cover is actually kind of sickening, and it's just not like other covers.  It feels so real!

*The background with the trees is beautiful.  I love the stream and the little ripples made from her toes.  The candles, bird, and tombstone are quite interesting.

*The girl looks so fragile, which makes this look so real.  I actually like that she isn't looking up.  She doesn't look super thin, but her hands and wrists make her look almost sickly.  It really matches the description of the girl on the back of the book.
