REVIEW: Sing You Home

Sing You Home
Jodi Picoult

Goodreads Description:
One miscarriage too many spelled the end of Max and Zoe Baxter's marriage. Though the former couple went quite separate ways, their fates remained entangled: After veering into alcoholism, Max is saved in multiple senses by his fundamentalist conversion; Zoe, for her part, finds healing relief in music therapy and the friendship, then romantic love with Vanessa, her counselor. After Zoe and Vanessa, now married, decide to have a baby, they realize that they must join battle with Max, who objects on both religious and financial grounds.

My thoughts:  This book wasn't hard to get into at all, although it did have a dull spot about 1/3 of the way through.  It got better.  It was pretty good, but not what I expected.

I found it really odd that during and after Max and Zoe's divorce, they really didn't question it.  Even Zoe, who didn't want the divorce, didn't seem to be working to get Max back.  I also found it odd that Zoe could all of a sudden fall in love with a woman and become a lesbian.  I am sure it happens, but the way it happened just seemed kind of unrealistic.  I could see becoming best friends with a woman like Vanessa, but I don't think I would want ever want to be with another woman, regardless of what we have in common.

Max's new religion was a little too much for me as well.  I am a Christian and feel it should be shared, but not to the extent that Max and his new pastor take it.  They weren't just sharing their views on homosexuality, they were really trying to cause emotional pain.  And I don't think you can be a true Christian and try to bring others down at the same time.  Of all people, I would think the pastor would know that judging is not his job.

I loved the law and legal aspect of this book.  Usually that is my favorite part of these types of books.  I love judge tv shows too.  I really liked that the legal aspect didn't take over the whole book.  Even at the end of the book when Max and Zoe were in court, it was really nice to still be able to read about their time outside of the court room.

In the end, I could see that Max and Zoe became real people.  They were no longer thinking about what they wanted, they were really thinking about the future children.  It was also at the end that I realized that this pastor really has no clue what it means to be a Christian.

It was overall a pretty good book.  I'm not sure if Jodi Picoult meant for the pastor to be that way or not.  I don't think his character would take much "research" to develop.  Maybe it is a lesson for all of us readers that the stereotype that pastors are genuinely good is not always true.  I really wasn't surprised with most of this book, and it really didn't have me thinking about it afterwards either.  I still have some more Jodi Picoult books to read, but I am going to take a little break!

My rating: ☺☺

Cover Crazy: Haunting Violet

This weekly meme is hosted by The Book Worms and is used to show the covers we are crazy about!

Haunting Violet
Alyxandra Harvey

What I love:
*Purple!  I absolutely love the color of this cover.  And maybe it is actually more blue, but it looks purple to me!

*It makes me question what she is laying there for...and actually, it looks like she is floating in water.  I wonder what the significance is of that and what it has to do with the book.

*The font is gorgeous.  It appears to be the same on all the covers, which I think is a smart idea.  I don't like too many changes in the different covers!

*I love her dress.  White makes me think of innocence, so it makes me wonder what her character is actually like.

Goodreads Description:
Violet Willoughby doesn't believe in ghosts. But they believe in her. After spending years participating in her mother's elaborate ruse as a fraudulent medium, Violet is about as skeptical as they come in all matters supernatural. Now that she is being visited by a very persistent ghost, one who suffered a violent death, Violet can no longer ignore her unique ability. She must figure out what this ghost is trying to communicate, and quickly because the killer is still on the loose.

Afraid of ruining her chance to escape her mother's scheming through an advantageous marriage, Violet must keep her ability secret. The only person who can help her is Colin, a friend she's known since childhood, and whom she has grown to love. Cover Crazy - Born at Midnight

This weekly meme is hosted by The Book Worms and is used to show the covers we are crazy about!

Born at Midnight - C.C. Hunter
Shadow Falls # 1

What I love:
*I love the misty blue/purple color.  Her black dress completely compliments the colors in this cover.

*It is symmetrical.  I don't know that I would normally like this, but it works for this cover.

*The color of the font in the title is perfect, as well as the author and series names.  The title is supposed to stand out, while the rest still needs to be there, but not so brightly.

Goodreads Description:

REVIEW: Salem Falls

Salem Falls
Jodi Picoult

Goodreads Description: Love can redeem a man...but secrets and lies can condemn him.
A handsome stranger comes to the sleepy New England town of Salem Falls in hopes of burying his past: once a teacher at a girls' prep school, Jack St. Bride was destroyed when a student's crush sparked a powder keg of accusation. Now, washing dishes for Addie Peabody at the Do-Or-Diner, he slips quietly into his new routine, and Addie finds this unassuming man fitting easily inside her heart. But amid the rustic calm of Salem Falls, a quartet of teenage girls harbor dark secrets -- and they maliciously target Jack with a shattering allegation. Now, at the center of a modern-day witch hunt, Jack is forced once again to proclaim his innocence: to a town searching for answers, to a justice system where truth becomes a slippery concept written in shades of gray, and to the woman who has come to love him.

My thoughts:  This book took me a little while to really get into.  400+ page books intimidate me, so it is typical for me to take a while to really get going.

This book starts with Jack St. Bride, just getting out of prison for a crime he did not commit.  He has no clue where he is going, but when he reaches Salem Falls, he finds a job and decides to stay.  Everything is going well for Jack.  He has a job, a place to live, and is even falling in love.  That is, until one day when a teenage witch accuses him of the same thing he went to prison for not too long prior.  Jack's world is turned upside down again, but slowly his friends start believing that he is innocent.  As all of the facts are coming together, a completely different picture is painted.  Something nobody knew about, except for 4 teenage girls, was going on right under their noses, and Jack St. Bride was taking the fall for it.

The ending was completely predictable.  It was disturbing, but the truth is that it happens all the time.  There were a couple of other parts that I found disturbing as well, but it's got the right balance.  I think it would make a great movie.

I found the characters to be pretty boring....except for the 4 teenagers.  Addie was a little interesting for a while because it appeared that she actually believed her daughter was still there, even though she had died several years before.  Otherwise, Jack and the other townspeople needed to be built up a little more.  It was as if several main points were laid out, but no descriptions given.  I loved reading about Jack as a child, but I wish there was more of it.  I wish there was more about Addie before and during her daughter's death.

Overall, it was a pretty good book.  I am starting to love Jodi Picoult.  This is the second book I have read by her, and I may just like her as much as I like Diane Chamberlain and Kristin Hannah.

My rating: ☺☺☺

If I Die - Rachel Vincent
Soul Screamers # 5

What I love:
* I absolutely love the colors!  She is dressed so brightly and beautifully, and he is so dark and plain.  It actually makes sense based on the first four books, as she is always the center of attention it seems.

* I love the movement portrayed in the cover, and also that the covers of all five books stayed consistent.

REVIEW: Abandon

Abandon
Meg Cabot
Abandon Trilogy # 1

Goodreads Description:
Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.
But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.
Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away . . . especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.
But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.

My thoughts:
This was overall a really good book.  I was really excited to hear more about the story of Persephone and how Pierce is like her.  Only the basic story of Persephone and Hades was given though and I would have loved to hear more about it.  Maybe that will come up more in the next books.  I love the idea that Pierce died and came back to life.  I feel like it was her choice to come back.  However, the book talks about even though she drowned, because she had hypothermia, she was able to "wake up".   I don't know anything about medical stuff, so I'm not quite sure why hypothermia would save a drowning victim.

I loved that when Pierce moved to this new school, that she didn't shy away or really act like a new kid.  She got there and it was almost as if she was there all along because she fit in so well.  I also loved that she has a mind on her own.  She doesn't let anyone tell her what to do, and she is willing to give everyone a chance.  That is a huge surprise to me because of the number of people who have let her down.  I loved slowly learning about her past throughout the book, instead of everything being so sequential. It really kept me wanting to read more and more.

I also loved that there were parts that I didn't see coming.  Pierce learns in the book that certain people are against her, and she has been fighting them all along and didn't even know what she was fighting!  I also did not expect the ending to be what it was.  I was actually quite disappointed.  I feel like Pierce is being held back.  I am definitely going to pick up the next book, but things better change for Pierce or I am done!

Overall, this book was awesome, but I am unhappy with the ending.

My rating: ☺☺☺

Demon Trappers # 2
August 30, 2011

Goodreads Description:
Riley Blackthorne’s adventures continue in the second spellbinding Demon Trappers novel, as she battles demons… and a love that could destroy her
At the start of the second thrilling installment of the Demon Trappers series, 17-year-old Riley Blackthorne has about had it up to here. After the devastating battle at the Tabernacle, trappers are dead and injured, her sweet boyfriend Simon is gravely injured, and now her beloved late father’s been illegally poached from his grave by a very powerful necromancer. Add to the mix: Ori, one sizzling hot freelance demon hunter who’s made himself Riley’s unofficial body guard, and Beck, a super over-protective “friend” who acts more like a grouchy granddad, and Riley’s almost ready to leave Atlanta altogether.
But as the demon count in Atlanta increases, the already crippled Trappers Guild has its hands full, and, when the Vatican finally sends its own Demon Hunters to take care of the city’s “little” problem, pandemonium breaks loose. Only Riley knows that she might be the center of Hell’s attention: an extremely powerful Grade 5 demon is stalking her, and her luck can't last forever. As Riley’s life becomes a dangerous balancing act, will she be strong enough not to tip? And who will be there to catch her if she falls?

I absolutely loved the first book in this series and am so excited for this next one! This will be one of the few that I actually buy...so I REALLY liked it!

REVIEW: The Demon Trapper's Daughter

The Demon Trapper's Daughter
Jana Oliver
The Demon Trappers #1

Goodreads Description:
Riley Blackthorne just needs a chance to prove herself – and that’s exactly what the demons are counting on…
Seventeen-year-old Riley, the only daughter of legendary Demon Trapper, Paul Blackthorne, has always dreamed of following in her father's footsteps. The good news is, with human society seriously disrupted by economic upheaval and Lucifer increasing the number of demons in all major cities, Atlanta’s local Trappers’ Guild needs all the help they can get – even from a girl. When she’s not keeping up with her homework or trying to manage her growing crush on fellow apprentice, Simon, Riley’s out saving distressed citizens from foul-mouthed little devils – Grade One Hellspawn only, of course, per the strict rules of the Guild. Life’s about as normal as can be for the average demon-trapping teen.
But then a Grade Five Geo-Fiend crashes Riley’s routine assignment at a library, jeopardizing her life and her chosen livelihood. And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, sudden tragedy strikes the Trappers’ Guild, spinning Riley down a more dangerous path than she ever could have imagined. As her whole world crashes down around her, who can Riley trust with her heart – and her life?

My thoughts:
Atlanta.  2018.  Riley Blackthorne is the daughter of a master trapper, and she wants to become a trapper too.  But she is a girl.  Many members of the guild don't have faith in her, but Riley is determined to follow in her father's footsteps.  Then tragedy strikes and Riley needs to depend on her father's apprentice, Beck, even though she doesn't really want to.  She now has two "jobs" and also has to go to school!  She is doing the best that she can with what she is given.  Riley is also realizing that something different is going on in the demon world.  It seems as though they are working together, the holy water isn't working as it should be, and the demons are causing more damage than ever before!  When Riley tells the Trappers' Guild, they start putting things together, and actually believe her.  Then their worst nightmare occurs and they are forced to focus on more important things.

There are several characters in this book.  Riley is the main character, although Beck could possibly be considered a main character as well.  Some of the story is told from his perspective, although not as much as Riley's.  Riley is a very determined girl.  She is tired of everyone treating her like a child and calling her names like Princess.  She is going to do whatever it takes to become a trapper like her father.  Beck is kind of a big brother to Riley, although she doesn't really like him.  She is very annoyed with and bothered by him.  However, she needs him, even if she won't admit it.  He is always looking after her best interests.  He is very much a country boy, and it is actually very difficult for me to read his country talk even though I am from the country!  I did like it though, because it made him different.  Riley also meets Simon, a fellow trapper, working as an apprentice under another master, Harper.  They become good friends, and it quickly escalates to more than friends.  Her best friend, Peter, has stayed by her side through everything.  They are split apart and no longer go to the same school.  He tries calling several times, but she is unable to answer due to other things going on.  He begins getting frustrated and just isn't too sure that he can handle all of her demon trapping anymore.

I just loved the whole world created by Oliver.  The demons in here are awesome, although I don't think I would think that if I ever ran into one!  Oliver described them so well.  And I love that it is so complicated to trap each of them.  There are different kinds of demons, and each one has a different way to trap it.  And some of the aids can even be combined to work for the trapper.  I also loved that there were zombie slaves in this book, but I was quite creeped out by the whole idea.  They aren't quite the zombies we think of, as they don't eat people.  There were also witches, necromancers, and angels.  I especially loved the angels!  Their wings and white light can only be seen if they want you to see it.  Riley finds out at the end that one of her acquaintances really is an angel.

My rating: ☺☺☺☺☺
