The Pirate Captain's Daughter
Eve Bunting
This is a very good book for a middle school student. I did enjoy it myself, but it was a very basic story. I read it in one sitting. I think one paragraph could very well sum up this book. There just isn't a whole lot that happens. I did really like the characters though. I loved that Catherine has no problem pretending to be a boy, and that her dad loves her that much to let her be on the pirate ship with him.

Would-Be Witch
Kimberly Frost
Southern Witch # 1
This book was recommended to me. I thought it would be hilarious, but it really wasn't. It wasn't laugh-out-loud funny like I was expecting. I did really like the characters though. It seemed like Tammy Jo was doing whatever she could to try to fix the problems going on in Duval, she would just make things worse. She always needed somebody's help to fix the problem she created by trying to fix something else! I loved the way the characters interacted as well. There were a couple of times that I thought I knew what was going on, or that a certain character (or two) were absolutely horrible, but then I was proved wrong! The ending very much surprised me....although I could see it coming right before it happened. Anyway, I think it really was a great book, but my expectations were just too high, so I feel let down.

Sarah's Choice
Wanda E. Brunstetter
Brides of Lehigh Canal # 3
I have been waiting to read this book for quite a while now. I have been on the list at the library, so I waited it out instead of buying it. This was the third book in the Brides of Lehigh Canal series, and it was just as fulfilling as the first two. I think I learned more about life in the 1800s in this book than I did in the others though. Sarah is a lock tender for the canal, and I had no idea that this was a job at one point in time! At the end of the book, the author gave a website that shows the real thing, and you can even go there for a ride and everything! So, one day I will go and see it, even though it is about 1200 miles from me. Back to the book! It is very refreshing to read about true Christians, and reading about people coming to God and all of that. I usually go in spurts as to which genre I am most interested in. I was most interested in young adult last month, and now I think I am going to pick up some more Christian romances.

Get It Started
Morgan Burke
The Party Room # 1
Goodreads Description:
The party room. On Manhattan's Upper East Side. Everybody's fabulous. No one gets carded. Then someone dies. The Party Room is where the prep school crowd goes to drink up and hook up. The cocktails are chill and the bartender's hot. Everyone knows everyone -- except the guy that Samantha Byrne leaves with one night. The next day Sam's missing. Then she's found dead in Central Park, murdered brutally. It looks like a copycat killing of another girl who was murdered years earlier. By someone from Talcott Prep. The killer is one of them. He knows where they live. And where they play....
I actually read this when I was in middle school. I know that I really liked it, so I would love to read it again. I haven't been able to find it at the local libraries though!

REVIEW: Keeper of the Light
Keeper of the Light
Diane Chamberlain
St. Anne Trilogy # 1
Goodreads Description:
Dr. Olivia Simon is on duty in the emergency room of North Carolina's Outer Banks Hospital when a gunshot victim is brought in. Midway through the desperate effort to save the young woman's life, Olivia realizes who she is—Annie O'Neill. The woman Olivia's husband, Paul, is in love with.
When Annie dies on the operating table, she leaves behind three other victims. Alec O'Neill, who thought he had the perfect marriage. Paul, whose fixation on Annie is unshakable. And Olivia, who is desperate to understand the woman who destroyed her marriage.
Now they are left with unanswered questions about who Annie really was. And about the secrets she kept hidden so well.
My thoughts:
I cannot even attempt to properly describe this book to you, because it is way better than even the description on the back cover of the book! Really, the description of this book is the bare minimum of what it is really about. Yes that is the main idea, but there is so much more to it! Slowly throughout the novel, connections between people, events, and places are being made. As I read on, I was realizing more and more the weaving of the characters and their lives. The only way I can describe the ending of this book is "BOOM". Everything that I thought was going on wasn't even the big deal anymore. Truths are coming out, and the weaving of the characters stands out so much more. It's absolutely amazing.
I absolutely love the description and details of characters in Diane Chamberlain's novels. Every character serves a purpose and was put into the novel for a reason. Diane included a woman who caused so much pain even though she is dead, a daughter who is doing anything and everything to get somebody to pay attention, a son who is completely ignoring what has happened, a father and husband who is completely shutting down, one friend who wants to come in and save it all, another friend who is trying to understand what is going on by living through the dead woman, a man who is in love with and setting up his life with the dead woman, and finally, an old lady who knows everybody's secrets. Everyone just fits perfectly together by the end of this book. It's absolutely amazing how well written Diane Chamberlain's novels are. She doesn't forget a single detail.
I did absolutely love it though, like I do all Diane Chamberlain novels. She is just a wonderful writer. Every one of her books I have rated 5 stars. The details of events, places, etc. is just amazing!

REVIEW: Eighth Grade Bites
Eighth Grade Bites
Heather Brewer
The Chronicles of Vladmir Tod #1
Goodreads Description:
Vlad has to keep his vampire urges under control while dealing with the pressures of middle school.
Thirteen-year-old Vladimir Tod really hates junior high. Bullies harass him, the principal is dogging him, and the girl he likes prefers his best friend. Oh, and Vlad has a secret: His mother was human, but his father was a vampire. With no idea of the extent of his powers, Vlad struggles daily with his blood cravings and his enlarged fangs. When a substitute teacher begins to question him a little too closely, Vlad worries that his cover is about to be blown. But then he faces a much bigger problem: He’s being hunted by a vampire killer.
My thoughts:
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. This was the first I had read from Heather Brewer. Vlad is half human and half vampire. Only two people know his secret: his best friend Henry, and his guardian Nelly. He was orphaned 3 years ago and doesn't know much about his own powers. After finding his father's journal in the attic, he learns that his dad was hiding from Elysia, the vampire society, because he fell in love with a human. And now Vlad is being hunted by the very people his dad betrayed.
I love the plot in this book. I was kept interested the whole time, although it is not a very long book anyway. I love the fact that I am learning more about Vlad as he is learning about himself. I hate having to make assumptions about characters or events, and this book does not make you assume anything. So I think the plot was very well played out and I don't think anything is missing.
I also loved the characters. Henry, Vlad's best friend, really treats Vlad like a best friend. He jokes around about his vampirism and really is a great friend for Vlad. Nelly, Vlad's guardian, would do anything for him. She is a nurse and gets him blood from her work that would normally have been thrown away. She has been doing this for him for several years. She also injects blood into small capsules that she puts in the food she makes for his lunch for school. She seemed like kind of an airhead for a little bit though. When Vlad would come to her and tell her that something is wrong, and pretty much that he needed help, she would blow it off. The substitute teacher Mr. Otis had me on edge really. For a while I thought that he was the one after Vlad, and then I thought he could be trusted. I just went back and forth about him because he would do things that I just wasn't sure about.
This was a really great book, and I do intend on finishing the series. Heather Brewer is an awesome writer, so I may even decide to pick up some of her other works.

Shadowglass
Erica Hayes
The Shadowfae Chronicles # 2
Goodreads Description:
Welcome to secret world hidden behind shadowy fairy glamour, where thieving spriggans rob you blind, beautiful banshees mesmerize you with their song, big green trolls kick heads at nightclubs and vampire Mafiosi rule the streets. Here a seductive magic mirror lies hidden deep in a demon’s lair, with a simple warning: don’t stare at the glass…
Ice is a light-fingered fairy who can’t resist a look at the powerful mirror. She and her fairy friends run confidence games, pretending to be fortune tellers and bedazzling customers with their glamour. But Ice longs for more—she wants a real life, a respectable job and something to strive for. The mirror offers her a chance to achieve everything she’s ever dreamed of. But when she pilfers it, she discovers that its power comes with a price: the mirror is a gateway to obsession and madness... and it will take every trick in her arsenal just to survive.
I finished the first book quite a while ago. It was not what I was used to at all. It was full of sex...actually, that's what half of the story was about. I did really enjoy the book despite that, and think I just wasn't used to it because I normally read YA. Anyway, I have had this book on my wishlist for a while, and I think it's about time I pick it up.
Reads of the Week
I really did not have any time to do reviews this week, and I barely had any time to read anything!

Franny Billingsley
I had no clue what was going on too often in this book. It was like I was reading about one thing, and then all of a sudden I'm reading about something else...and there is no explanation or anything leading up to the change. It wasn't completely awful though. The plot was very interesting. It was unlike anything I have ever read, and I certainly don't regret reading it. It just wasn't great.

This was another one of those "Once Upon a Time is Timeless" books. It is sort of a series of different fairy tales, by a bunch of different authors. So far, I have only read one other. I chose this one because it was by the same author as the other book I read. This one did not measure up though. I felt like the whole beginning and middle of the story were great. It was all leading to a great ending, and then just at the very end, everything changes and things are not the way I expected them to be. Now that is usually good, but usually authors build up to that change, and they make sure it makes sense! This one didn't even make sense to me. This one was not completely awful either. I may pick up some other books in the series in the future, but not in the near future.

A Spy in the House
Y.S. Lee
The Agency # 1
This one really was decent. It wasn't my favorite, but I do intend on finishing the series someday. I have several other books that will come before this series though. I loved the characters, for the most part. Mary Quinn is a strong woman, but she doesn't let everyone know that. Many people consider her like any other woman at this time, one who would never go against a man. In the end, Mary pretty well saved her own life by keeping this trait a secret. I was definitely hoping for more mystery in this book. It had a lot of romance, which is ok too, but wasn't what I was expecting. Overall, it was an ok book, I may even add a smiley to my rating, but not quite yet. I still have to think it over a bit!

Forgotten
Cat Patrick
Release Date: June 7, 2011
Goodreads Description:
Each night when 16 year-old London Lane goes to sleep, her whole world disappears. In the morning, all that's left is a note telling her about a day she can't remember. The whole scenario doesn't exactly make high school or dating that hot guy whose name she can't seem to recall any easier. But when London starts experiencing disturbing visions she can't make sense of, she realizes it's time to learn a little more about the past she keeps forgetting-before it destroys her future.
Part psychological drama, part romance, and part mystery, this thought-provoking novel will inspire readers to consider the what-if's in their own lives and recognize the power they have to control their destinies.

About a week ago I saw this series at the bookstore. I had seen it several other times, on several people's lists, but just blew it off. When I saw it at the bookstore though, I realized just how much I had to have this series! I did buy the first book, and hopefully soon I will go get this one!

Reads of the Week
I decided that I just don't have time to do full reviews for all of the books I read. If I did, I wouldn't read as many books because I would be so busy blogging! So, I will do one blog post weekly consisting of mini-reviews of all the books I have read for the week, except for whichever books I do choose to do full reviews on. So, here is what I read this week:
Twenty Boy Summer
Sarah Ockler
This book had my emotions all over the place. The first couple of chapters made me want to cry. Then I was happy and joyful, then angry, and finally, I just felt love at the end. I can't even imagine being a teenager again after reading this book, with all of the emotions and uncertainties. This book had me wondering what kind of ending there would be, and I was very happy with this ending.

The Seven Kingdom's Trilogy # 1
I had a hard time getting into this at first. Once I got going though, I couldn't stop! It is unlike anything I have ever read....which is really nice because some of these other books I have been reading sound too much like other books by other authors! I love that Katsa does not want to get married or have children...mostly because I think she will change her mind when she does meet the perfect man. She just cannot be held back. I guess I liked it quite a bit too because I felt like I could relate to Katsa. I can't be held back and I'm not afraid to stand up for myself.
My rating: ☺☺☺☺
Betrayal
Robin Wasserman
Chasing Yesterday # 2
Betrayal was such a quick read, just like the first book in this series. I like this series because JD doesn't know who she really is... JD stands for Jane Doe. She's trying to figure everything out. When she remembers things, she questions whether it was a real memory or if it was planted there. I was completely shocked when she was betrayed by someone so close to her! It would be an awful feeling to be betrayed like she was. However, I still question now as to what that person's intentions were. I love books that keep you thinking! Anyway, there is only one book left in this series, and I just can't imagine how all of these questions could be answered in one short book!

Dark Descendant
Jenna Black
Descendents # 1
Release Date: April 26, 2011
Goodreads Description:
Nikki Glass can track down any man. But when her latest client turns out to be a true descendant of Hades, Nikki now discovers she can’t die. . . . Crazy as it sounds, Nikki’s manhunting skills are literally god-given. She’s a living, breathing descendant of Artemis who has stepped right into a trap set by the children of the gods. Nikki’s new “friends” include a descendant of Eros, who uses sex as a weapon; a descendant of Loki, whose tricks are no laughing matter; and a half-mad descendant of Kali who thinks she’s a spy. But most powerful of all are the Olympians, a rival clan of immortals seeking to destroy all Descendants who refuse to bow down to them. In the eternal battle of good god/bad god, Nikki would make a divine weapon. But if they think she’ll surrender without a fight, the gods must be crazy. . . .
I really like Jenna Black. I don't even remember where I saw this book, but it looks and sounds amazing. I absolutely love the cover, and I love reading about mythology. I will definitely be buying this when it comes out.

REVIEW: The False Princess
The False Princess
Eilis O'Neal
Goodreads Description:
Princess and heir to the throne of Thorvaldor, Nalia's led a privileged life at court. But everything changes when it's revealed, just after her sixteenth birthday, that she is a false princess, a stand-in for the real Nalia, who has been hidden away for her protection. Cast out with little more than the clothes on her back, the girl now called Sinda must leave behind the city of Vivaskari, her best friend, Keirnan, and the only life she's ever known.
Sinda is sent to live with her only surviving relative, an aunt who is a dyer in a distant village. She is a cold, scornful woman with little patience for her newfound niece, and Sinda proves inept at even the simplest tasks. But when Sinda discovers that magic runs through her veins - long-suppressed, dangerous magic that she must learn to control - she realizes that she can never learn to be a simple village girl.
Returning to Vivaskari for answers, Sinda finds her purpose as a wizard scribe, rediscovers the boy who saw her all along, and uncovers a secret that could change the course of Thorvaldor's history, forever.
A dazzling first novel, The False Princess is an engrossing fantasy full of mystery, action, and romance.
My thoughts:
Just after her 16th birthday, Nalia is told by the king that she is not really a princess....and her name isn't even Nalia! She leaves court pretty much immediately, and becomes Sinda. I really enjoyed learning about Sinda and following the changes in her life. It was really refreshing to read about a spoiled girl who becomes humble. After leaving court, Sinda does not act spoiled at all. She didn't even throw a fit when she had to leave. She didn't ask for a bunch of clothes or money. Becoming a simple village girl was tough for Sinda, especially when she learns of the magic she possesses. She has no idea how to control it, as nobody has ever taught her how to use or manage it. In the end, she is still thinking about everyone else. She went back to court to make sure that the real princess was there. She could have just kept going on with her life. When her own life was in danger, she kept moving on so that everything would be right at court. I loved the characters in this book and their interactions together. It really was a simple and easy read, but there was always something going on and I was always looking forward to what was coming next.

What Matters Most
Luanne Rice
Goodreads Description:
What if you could relive one time in your life? What would you choose if you could make one thing right? For Bernadette and Tom, it is a return to their roots in Ireland and a love that broke every rule and could have withstood any consequence—but the one that broke their hearts. For James and Kathleen, whose indelible bond was forged in a Dublin orphanage before one was adopted and carried across the sea to America, it is a reunion they’ve dreamed of all their young lives, even if it defies reason. From the Emerald Isle to the Connecticut shore, four lives are about to come together in a confrontation that will challenge each of them to leave behind the past and all they once thought was important, and to embrace at last what matters most.

"Waiting On" Wednesday (#4)
"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine. I will use this to show the upcoming releases that I am waiting on.
Working Stiff
Rachel Caine
Revivalist # 1
Release Date: August 2, 2011
Goodreads Description:
A brand new adventure from the award-winning, New York Times and USA Today bestselling Rachel Caine, author of the Morganville Vampires and Weather Warden series ...
Bryn Davis is new on the job as a funeral director, but even she knows that once you’re dead, you ought to stay that way. But Fairview Mortuary has a hidden backroom business: reviving the dead for profit, at extortionate rates.
Finding out may cost Bryn more than her life ... it may just take away her death, too.
I have never read anything by Rachel Caine. I do have the whole Morganville Vampires series though (which I need to start soon!) and have heard great things about her. This book sounds super good and I am really excited for its release!

REVIEW: The Iron King
The Iron King
Julie Kagawa
Iron Fey # 1
Goodreads Description:
Meghan Chase has a secret destiny—one she could never have imagined…
Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school…or at home.
When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change.
But she could never have guessed the truth—that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face…and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.
My thoughts: This book had me hooked by the second chapter. I just love the characters in this story. And even though Ethan is sort of the pesky little brother to Meghan, I love their relationship. He looks up to her and I guess I really think he just believes in her. I am not sure if she sees him as much of a pesky little brother though, because she talks to him the way an adult would talk to a child and she treats him as though what he tells her is the truth...or could be. I like the way Robbie is like a brother to her. He really takes care of her, even when he's goofing around. I really kind of liked the cliche high school teenager life stuff in this book. I think it shows what kind of a character she has developed as the story goes on while having to deal with bullies and just regular high school stuff.
This book was very fast paced. There was always something going on. As soon as Meghan is safe, something else happens and she has to rethink her plan. It seemed like every time she was in trouble, someone came to save her. I am really hoping that she will take care of herself more in the next books. I am super excited to read the rest of this series. I am curious to see what will happen with Meghan. I am also looking forward to finding out more about Ash and Puck, and whether or not she will stick with either one of them.

Sometimes It Happens
Lauren Barnholdt
Goodreads Description:
On the last day of her junior year, Hannah's boyfriend Ryan dumped her. Facing a summer of loneliness, Hannah turns to her best friend Ava for comfort. Ava does what BFFs do: she stays by Hannah's side...until it's time for Ava to head up to Maine for the summer. Also left behind is Ava's boyfriend, Noah, who's such a great guy he gets Hannah a job at the diner he waits tables at. Slowly, Hannah comes out of her funk thanks to Noah's good conversation and their fun times at the diner. But things get complicated when their friendship turns into attraction--and one night, into a passionate kiss. The novel opens on the first day of senior year; the day Hannah is going to see Ava, Ryan, and Noah all in one place. Over the course of the day secrets and betrayals are revealed, and alliances are broken and reformed. In the end, everyone is paired up once again, but not the way you might think...
