REVIEW: Saving Max

Saving Max
Antoinette van Heugten

Goodreads Description:
Max Parkman—autistic and whip-smart, emotionally fragile and aggressive—is perfect in his mother's eyes. Until he's accused of murder.
Attorney Danielle Parkman knows her teenage son Max's behavior has been getting worse—using drugs and lashing out. But she can't accept the diagnosis she receives at a top-notch adolescent psychiatric facility that her son is deeply disturbed. Dangerous.
Until she finds Max, unconscious and bloodied, beside a patient who has been brutally stabbed to death.
Trapped in a world of doubt and fear, barred from contacting Max, Danielle clings to the belief that her son is innocent. But has she, too, lost touch with reality? Is her son really a killer?
With the justice system bearing down on them, Danielle steels herself to discover the truth, no matter what it is. She'll do whatever it takes to find the killer and to save her son from being destroyed by a system that's all too eager to convict him.

My thoughts: I absolutely loved this book.  I really got into it starting at about page 100.  It was nothing to read even those first 100 pages though, because this book is extremely well written.  It doesn't have any huge unnecessary words.  It doesn't go into detail for pages and pages.  And the characters are all well developed and play important roles.
I assumed before I even started the story that Max didn't actually kill someone.  As I was reading the story building up to when Max and the other patient were found, I was learning more and more about the mother and her extreme denial of her son's problems.  I can understand that maybe she wasn't seeing things at home, but she was even in denial about what Max was doing in the facility!  I was becoming extremely frustrated with this woman, which is kind of ridiculous because she is just a character.  But if I saw her in real life, I would slap her and tell her to wake up!  I understand that she was standing by her son because that is her son, but she was acting as if she already knew without a question that he didn't do it, when absolutely all proof is pointing to Max!
The investigation was amazing in this book.  Max's mother, her lawyer, and a private investigator worked together to prove Max's innocence.  Some of the things the author came up with, I would have never even thought of.  There were a couple of things in the investigation part that made me think about the amount of research done by the author.  I am a huge court-tv addict, but I am not an expert.  I think some of the evidence brought forth by the defense would have actually been inadmissible in the real world.  Therefore, the ending made me feel like it wasn't real.  It made me question if the verdict would go the same way, if this were a real trial in the real world.
Overall, this was an amazing book.  I questioned a couple of things the author wrote, but the shock I felt at the end of this book made me forget about everything else.  After reading this book, I couldn't even move for a little while.  I was just so in shock...mostly because this story could be so real.

My rating: ☺☺☺☺☺

"Waiting On" Wednesday (#3)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine.  I will use this to show the upcoming releases that I am waiting on!

Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me
Chelsea Handler

Goodreads Description:
"My tendency to make up stories and lie compulsively for the sake of my own amusement takes up a good portion of my day and provides me with a peace of mind not easily attainable in this economic climate."--Chelsea Handler, from Chapter 10 of Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang

It's no lie: Chelsea Handler loves to smoke out "dumbassness," the condition people suffer from that allows them to fall prey to her brand of complete and utter nonsense. Friends, family, co-workers--they've all been tricked by Chelsea into believing stories of total foolishness and into behaving like total fools. Luckily, they've lived to tell the tales and, for the very first time, write about them.

I love love love Chelsea Handler!  I have read all of her books so far and she is just hilarious.  She is the type of person that you either love or can't stand.  I am so excited for this book to come out, and have even considered checking out her tour!

REVIEW: Violet Eyes

Violet Eyes
Debbie Viguie

Goodreads Description:
When a storm brings the dashing Prince Richard to her family's farm, Violet falls in love at first sight. Richard also gives Violet his heart, but he knows his marriage is destined to be an affair of state, not of passion. For the king and queen have devised a contest to determine who will win their son's hand in marriage.

To be reunited with her prince, Violet must compete against princesses from across the land. It will take all of her wits - and a little help from an unexpected source - if Violet is to demonstrate the depth of her character and become Richard's bride.

My thoughts: When I saw this book at the library, I just had to get it.  I know that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but the covers can give you at least some idea of what the book would be about!  I saw several other books in this series of retold fairy tales, called "'Once Upon a Time' is Timeless".  And after reading this one, I intend on reading several more, if not all of them.
Violet Eyes is a retelling of "The Princess and the Pea".  Violet is a farm girl who is waiting for another storm to pass through, knowing that storms bring about a dramatic change in her life.  Prince Richard is injured in the storm and Violet and her family nurse him back to health.  Violet and Prince Richard fall in love, but Prince Richard knows that he has to marry a princess, and that a contest put on by the King and Queen will decide which princess he will marry.  This contest includes several tests to see which princess is the most sensitive.  Violet is not exactly a sensitive princess.  However, she is willing to do what it takes to get and keep her prince.
I loved this book.  It was a short, light read, but it was the perfect length for this story.  The characters were perfect, and a couple even surprised me.  Some of the characters I laughed out loud at because of how ridiculous they were.  I was Team Violet the whole way because I do really think it is important for a woman to know how to farm and bake pies and that sort of thing.  I'm not all about women who don't do anything but look pretty!  However, some of the things the characters were doing and saying were more of a front for what was really going on!  I really liked that there was still some guessing in this story!  I was really unsure when it got more into "The Princess and the Pea", but it was even better than the original fairy tale!  It is a little more practical, although this story still has the fairy tale aspect because really, life just doesn't work out that way for us common folk!

My rating: ☺☺☺☺☺

First Grave on the Right
Darynda Jones
Charley Davidson # 1

Goodreads Description:
A smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper.

Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light.” But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.

This is a thrilling debut novel from an exciting newcomer to the world of paranormal romantic suspense.
